Cotton Spray Schedule: When Should the First, Second and Third Spray Be Applied?

Most cotton farmers lose yield not because they used a weak product, but because they sprayed two weeks after the pest had already settled in. By then the jassids have curled the leaves, or the pink bollworm larva is already inside the boll where no spray can reach it. Getting the timing right matters more than getting the costliest bottle.

Sowing time varies by type. Hirsutum hybrids go in between May and 15 July. Herbaceum varieties are sown later, between July and September. Under irrigation, summer cotton is sown in February and March.

What mistakes make a cotton spray fail?

Even a correct product at the correct time fails if the application is wrong. The common ones:

• Spraying at midday. Cotton leaves have a waxy surface and the droplet evaporates before it is absorbed. Spray in the early morning or after 4 pm.

• Skipping the spreader. Water beads up and rolls off cotton leaves. A silicon spreader at the recommended dose is the cheapest way to raise the efficiency of everything else in the tank.

• Repeating the same molecule. If the same insecticide is used three sprays in a row, the surviving population is the resistant one and it becomes the next generation.
