There is no single best. For nutrients, fish-based liquids and liquid vermicompost supply nitrogen. For growth response, seaweed extract is the best-researched biostimulant. Most growers use both — a nutrient source for feeding and a biostimulant for rooting, flowering and stress tolerance.

Steep well-rotted cow dung or vermicompost in water at roughly one part to ten for seven to ten days, stirring daily, then strain and dilute before use. Jeevamrut and fish amino acid are the two most widely used farm-made liquid fertilizers in India.

Liquid organic fertilizers act fastest because nutrients are already in solution — fish amino acid, liquid vermicompost extract and jeevamrut show a response within days. Solid manures and oilseed cakes take weeks to mineralise before the crop can use them.

A good liquid fertilizer states its nutrient content, carries an FCO registration number, and dissolves cleanly without residue. Fish-based and vermicompost liquids feed the plant; seaweed extract biostimulants improve uptake and stress tolerance. Choose based on which of the two you actually need.

Oilseed cakes are the highest — groundnut cake carries roughly 7% nitrogen, and castor and neem cake around 4 to 5%, against about 0.5% in farmyard manure. Fish meal is also nitrogen-rich. Seaweed extract is a biostimulant and is not a nitrogen source.

Apply liquid fertilizer in the early morning or late afternoon, never in midday heat, onto moist soil or a well-watered crop. For biostimulants like seaweed extract, apply at active growth stages — vegetative, pre-flowering and fruit set — rather than after stress has already set in.
